Important Large-Sized Redware Flowerpot with Ornamental Handles, Incised "Anthony W. Bacher / 1877," Winchester, VA origin, large-sized tapered pot with tooled shoulder and elaborately-crimped rim, the shoulder fitted with flattened open handles curled against the sides of pot. Handles profusely decorated with impressed punchwork. Surface decorated with streaks of manganese under a clear lead glaze. Incised in fine script on underside "Anthony W. Bacher / 1877." Possibly the finest Bacher flowerpot of this form known. A previously undocumented example. Base chips. 8 1/2" thin crack from rim. Small chip to one handle. 3/4" shallow stone ping near base. 1" and 3/4" shallow chips to underside of crimped rim. In-the-firing stacker marks to top of rim, and a few areas of minor, expected wear to some others areas of rim crimping. H 10 1/2".
