Stoneware Canning with Shield Decoration, Western PA origin, circa 1875, cylindrical jar with rounded "wax sealer" rim, the front decorated with a stenciled patriotic shield surrounded by dots and flourishes. Provenance: Tom McCandless Collection, Hopewell, NJ. Excellent condition with a shallow chip and expected wear to inner wax sealer rim. Faint surface line to right of decoration, which does not extend through to interior and likely occurred in the firing. H 7 3/4".
