Stoneware Canning Jar with Stenciled Shield Decoration, Stenciled "JAS. HAMILTON / & CO. / GREENSBORO / PA," circa 1875, cylindrical jar with sloped shoulder and rounded rim with wax sealer interior, the front decorated with a heavily-detailed shield surrounding the words "JAS. HAMILTON / & CO. / GREENSBORO. / PA." Brushed cobalt stripes at base and shoulder. Crisp stenciling of a desirable motif. Provenance: Tom McCandless Collection, Hopewell, NJ. Several large salt drips on underside. 2" salt drip at base on side of jar. Light chipping to interior of rim and a restored 3/4" chip on exterior of rim. Restoration to smaller chips to inner wax sealer rim. H 9 1/2".
