One-and-a-Half-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Bird on Stump Decoration, Stamped "NEW YORK STONEWARE CO.," Fort Edward, NY origin, circa 1875, cylindrical jar with rounded shoulder and flaring rim, decorated with a slip-trailed bird with crest and long tail, perched on a stump flanked by shrubs, flowers, and dotted trails. Includes salt-glazed lid, impressed with a different 1 1/2 gallon capacity mark than jar. Excellent decoration on a desirable small size. Provenance: Tom McCandless Collection, Hopewell, NJ. Excellent condition. Chip to interior of rim. Minor chip to exterior of rim, and minor nicks to inner ledge where a lid would rest. Faint 1" line from rim. H 10 1/2".
