Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Cream Jar with Cobalt Gooney Bird Decoration, Stamped "M. WOODRUFF / CORTLAND," NY State origin, circa 1867-1869, large-sized ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles. Decorated with a large slip-trailed cobalt design of a long-necked bird with crest, open mouth, and upswept wing. Additional tornado-shaped design to right of bird. A good example of a desirable New York State design, fresh from a decades-old collection. Essentially as-made condition. Spot of staining to front. Over-salting to cobalt. Stone ping at base on reverse. Flaking to underside only. H 12".
