Rare Shenandoah Valley Glazed Redware Spittoon with Raised Signature "Solomon Bell / Strasburg / Va.," third quarter 19th century, molded spittoon with columned border, oval opening at shoulder, and circular opening on recessed top, the surface decorated with sponged manganese over a bright orange ground and covered in a clear lead glaze. Underside bears the large raised signature "Solomon Bell / Strasburg / Va.," which was incised into the plaster mold of the spittoon when it was originally made. Rare form with excellent color. Provenance: Descended in the family of Betty Cooley, the wife of potter, Richard Franklin "Polk" Bell. Chips to opening on top surface. Worn spots and a few small chips to top edge and top surface. Wear to raised signature on underside. Wear to edge on underside, probably in the firing. H 5" ; Diameter 8 1/2".
