Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar with Incised X, attributed to Dave the Slave, Lewis Miles Factory, Horse Creek Valley, Edgefield, SC, circa 1850, approximately four-gallon rotund jar with tooled shoulder and arching tab handles, the surface covered in a streaky olive-colored alkaline glaze. Incised with a large X on shoulder. Provenance: From a consignor in the Midwest. Shallow chipping and wear to interior of rim. Chip to each handle. Small chip to exterior of rim. Thin 3 3/4" inverted Y-shaped line to right of the right handle. H 12 1/2".
