Very Rare Half-Gallon Stoneware Cake Crock with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "B.C. MILBURN / ALEXA," Alexandria, VA origin, circa 1850, low-walled cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, squared rim, and applied tab handles, decorated on the front with a two-stemmed floral design in vibrant cobalt slip. Reverse decorated with three cobalt leaves. Impressed under one handle "1/2 B.C. MILBURN / ALEXA." Very rare form for this maker in an exceedingly rare size. Numerous small rim chips. Tiny handle chip. Two hairlines from rim, measuring 2 1/2" and 1 1/2" on exterior. A few other minor hairlines from rim, each visible mostly on interior of rim, with less than a 1/4" visible on exterior. Small handle chip. Small base chip. H 4 3/4" ; Diameter 7 1/8".
