Rare Open-Handled Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Chain and Floral Decoration, Baltimore, MD origin, circa 1815-20, one-gallon ovoid jar with heavily-tooled shoulder, tall collar, and open loop handles. Decorated on each side with cobalt chain link and open-petaled clover designs. The Manhattan-style form of this jar was likely inspired by master potter, Henry Remmey, Sr., after his arrival in Baltimore in 1812. Horizontal surface lines in rim, which do not extend through to interior. Hairlines in one handle. Surface lines at base, including one measuring 5", which do not extend through to interior. A 6" line extending diagonally up from base, a small portion of which is barely visible on the interior. H 9 1/2".
