Monumental Stoneware Jar Signed "Morgan & Amoss," Baltimore, c1820

April 10, 2010 Stoneware Auction

Lot #: 272

Price Realized: $6,900.00 (Price includes 15% buyer's premium).

Outstanding Very Large Stoneware Jar with Slip-Trailed Cobalt Floral Decoration, Incised on Underside "Morgan & Amoss / Makers / Pitt Street / Baltimore / 1820," approximately eight-gallon, ovoid jar with rounded foot, large tab handles, flaring rim, and shoulder embellished with heavy combed incising. Shoulder further decorated on both sides with daisies extending from sweeping leafy stems, executed in bold slip-trailed cobalt. Underside incised with the script signature "Morgan & Amoss / Makers / Pitt Street / Baltimore / 1820". Additionally incised on the underside with the notation "22 - 17 1/2 M 14 1/2," indicating the pre-firing measurements of the jar. We believe this jar, because of its extremely large size, may have served as a storefront piece advertising the pottery of William Morgan and Thomas Amoss. The highly unusual inclusion of measurements on the underside also suggests that the jar was something special to its potter. Recently found in the basement of a home in Charlottesville, VA, this jar is one of the most important examples of Baltimore stoneware to be sold in recent years, and one of the finest pieces by this potting firm known. 7 1/2" crack and 5 1/2" crack from rim. 6" hairline from rim. Hairlines on underside, extending a short distance onto base. Minor, glazed-over rim chip. Old wire around rim. H 19 1/2".
