Exceptional Five-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Elaborate Cobalt Fuschia Decoration, Stamped "HAMILTON / Greensboro / PA," circa 1860, semi-ovoid churn with tooled midsection, ribbed lug handles, and tall, flaring collar. Decorated with brushed cobalt bands on the collar and a bold and elaborate fuschia design extending across the front. Base decorated with a script "5" flanked by dashes. Impressed on the reverse with a five-gallon capacity mark along with one of the maker stamps used by master potter, William Leet Hamilton, during his tenure in Greensboro, PA. A fine and highly decorative example of early Greensboro stoneware. Near mint condition with a shallow chip to bottom edge of rim and two minor chips on interior of rim where a lid would rest. Also a thin 3/4" chip near base, which occurred in the firing. H 17 1/2".
