Extremely Rare and Fine Stoneware Jug with Large Incised Fish Decoration, Ohio origin, circa 1825, skillfully-thrown, highly ovoid jug with rounded spout and applied handle, decorated with a large and well-executed incised fish extending across the front. Fish features incised body stripes, highly-detailed fins, and a large circular eye, its body brushed over in a very unusual ochre slip composed of iron or manganese. Decoration measures approximately 8 1/2" long. Additional ochre highlights at handle terminals. Found in Ohio approximately forty years ago and never offered for sale since that time. Vertical crack extending 10" from base on reverse. H 14 3/4".
