Extremely Rare Squat-Formed Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Incised Foliate Decoration, Remmey or Crolius Families, Manhattan, NY, late 18th or early 19th century, squat-shaped, bulbous jar with tooled foot and shoulder, open loop handles, and slightly flared rim. Decorated from handle to handle on both sides with a finely-incised undulating vine bearing numerous leaves. Additional incised decoration under each handle. Decoration filled with bright cobalt slip. Exceptional form. This jar is the only example from New York City potted in this style we are aware of. Decoration and color are consistent with stoneware produced by members of the Crolius and Remmey families in Manhattan, NY, during the latter part of the 18th century and early part of the 19th century. Rim chips, the largest of which occurred in the firing and is glazed over. 3 1/2", 1 1/4", and 2 1/4" lines in surface only, which likely occurred in the firing and do not extend through to the interior. Base chips. Some flaking to underside. Heavy flaking to interior. H 8 1/2" ; Diameter (at opening) 9".
