Very Fine Thomas Commeraw One-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Impressed Clamshell Decorations, Manhattan, NY origin, circa 1810, one-gallon ovoid jug with rounded foot and heavily-tooled spout, decorated with an impressed "clamshell" motif embellished with impressed tassel designs. Stamped in five lines across the midsection "COMMERAWS / STONEWARE / CORLEARS / HOOK / N. YORK." Impressed words, decoration, and handle terminals highlighted in cobalt slip. Although previously believed to be another potter of European descent working beside the Croliuses and Remmeys, research by Brandt Zipp has uncovered that Thomas Commeraw was, in fact, a free black potter.
