Exceptional One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Running Horse Decoration, Stamped "LYONS," Thompson Harrington, Lyons, NY, circa 1855, cylindrical jar with rounded shoulder, flared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with an artistically slip-trailed design of a running horse atop a grassy field. Horse depicted in a dynamic pose with flowing tail and detailed reins, saddle, and stirrups. Slip-trailed "1" above decoration. The impressed mark, "LYONS," appears below the rim, used by master potter, Thompson Harrington, at his pottery in Wayne County, NY, circa 1855. Today, Harrington is praised as having produced some of the most ornately-decorated examples of American stoneware known. Includes original lid. An outstanding small-sized jar with an extremely rare and finely-executed figural design. One of the finest examples of the ever-popular horse motif to sell at auction in recent years. Provenance: From a thirty-year private collection. Old restoration to 1 1/2" x 5/8" base chip. Old restoration to 1" x 7/8" rim chip. Shallow 1" chip on top of rim with a few faint 1/4" lines extending from it. Some wear to high points on cobalt. Minor handle nick. Small chips and wear to interior where a lid would rest. Minor glazed-over base chip. Lid with firing flaws and 3/4" loose flake to edge. H 10".
