Scarce One-and-a-Half-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "E & L P NORTON / BENNINGTON VT," circa 1870, cylindrical jar with sloped shoulder, flaring rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large slip-trailed cobalt design of a crested bird with long tail, perched on a leaf. This Norton design is difficult to find on this size and form. Includes a salt-glazed lid, which is a different color than the jar, but is probably original. Excellent condition. A small rim chip. A small stone ping below rim on reverse, and a small stone ping under one handle. Two small chips to one handle. A minor nick to opposite handle. Lid has a minor nick to knob. H 10".
