Redware Squirrel-with-Nut Figure

Rare Glazed Redware Figure of a Squirrel Holding a Nut, Pennsylvania origin, third quarter 19th century, hand-modeled figure of a seated squirrel holding a nut between its paws. Figure features a heavily-incised tail, pointed ears, bent rear legs, and impressed circular eyes. Squirrel rests on an oval base with impressed circles around the border and an impressed flower blossom design between its legs. Exceptional folk art form. Provenance: Ex-collection Pauline Heilman and Richard Flanders Smith. Pictured on Smith's poster "REDWARE: BIRDS and BEASTS," printed in 1993. Section of tail reglued and colored at the break. Small chips to tips of ears. Faint lines at base of ears, which probably occurred in the firing. Chip to rear of base. H 4 3/4".
