Outstanding and Extremely Rare Large-Sized Redware Figure of a Deer, Pennsylvania origin, third quarter 19th century, hand-modeled figure of a standing deer with incised face, hooves, and tail. Eyes composed of impressed ovals within ovals. Figure stands atop an oval base lavishly-decorated with impressed circles, ovals, X's, and leaves. Surface covered in a striking gunmetal glaze made of lead and manganese. Impressive size and bold glaze. Very rare form in American redware. An exceptional example of ceramic folk art. Provenance: Ex-collection Pauline Heilman. Restoration to antlers. Restoration to section of one ear. In-the-firing separation line extending from neck to body on one side. Additional in-the-firing separation line on underside. Some minor, very faint lines in surface. H 8" ; Length 6 1/2".
