Extremely Rare Redware Indian and Stump Bank, Pennsylvania origin, 19th century, hand-modeled bank in the form of a large tree stump with kneeling Indian peering from behind. Indian depicted with long hair and fringed pants, his hand raised above his eyes. Stump features heavily-incised bark, applied roots, and coleslaw shrubs around the base. Stump and shrubs decorated with cream and green highlights. Surface covered in a clear lead glaze. Slot carved into top surface of stump. The name "N. FALES" was carved into the underside after firing. An exceptional form surviving in phenomenal condition. Provenance: Christie's Sale of the Seamen's Bank Collection, March 13, 1991. Pictured in color in Christie’s catalog for that sale. Two in-the-firing separation lines in base. H 5 1/2" ; Diameter (of base) 5 3/4".
