Important and Outstanding Eight-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar, Stamped "D S" and "8" on Handles, Daniel Seagle, Vale, Lincoln County, NC, circa 1840, highly ovoid jar with thin rounded rim and very large pocket-like handles, covered in a streaky greenish alkaline glaze. Bold form and imposing size. An exceptional example of early Southern stoneware. 1 1/8" rim chip and some roughness to rim. Light wear and minor nicks to one handle. Light wear to opposite handle. H 16 1/2".
