AUCTION HIGHLIGHT!  (Jan. 30, 2010 - Young Estate Highlights | John Bell Pottery | Redware)

Extremely Rare and Important Redware Figure of a Whippet in Exceptional Original Paint, Stamped Twice "JOHN BELL," Waynesboro, PA, circa 1850, molded figure of a whippet with crossed legs, reclining atop a rectangular base. Figure features an incised collar, toes, and muzzle. Surface of figure coated in a visually-appealing grayish-silver paint with black painted eyes, eyelashes, whiskers, and toes, the dog's mouth painted red. Base painted an attractive bright green. Underside impressed twice with the maker's mark "JOHN BELL." We believe this whippet to be the finest example of Bell family pottery, and easily one of the finest examples of Shenandoah Valley pottery, to be sold at auction in the past several years. The figure and its boldy-painted surface have survived in remarkable condition. Light wear to paint on whippet. Some wear to green paint on base, revealing underlying silver paint. Chip to one corner of base. H 7" ; Length 10".
