Rare Five-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Cobalt Deer Decoration, Stamped "J. BURGER, JR. / ROCHESTER, N.Y.," circa 1885, semi-ovoid churn with sloped and tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and tall flaring rim. Decorated with a large artistically-rendered, cobalt design of stag with spotted and shaded body standing on a grassy lawn. Slip-trailed 5 to right of maker's mark. Excellent color and highly desirable decoration. Flaking to surface. 3 1/2" Y-shaped hairline to left of deer. 11" inverted Y-shaped hairline extending down side of jar through handle. Small chips and expected wear to interior where a lid would sit. H 17 3/4".
