Shenandoah Valley Redware Wall Pocket, attrib. to Eberly

October 31, 2009 Stoneware Auction

Lot #: 257

Price Realized: $3,450.00 (Price includes 15% buyer's premium).

Rare Shenandoah Valley Redware Wall Pocket with Applied Bird and Floral Decorations, attributed to J. Eberly & Co., Strasburg, VA, circa 1890, wheel-thrown, vase-shaped vessel with flattened back, coggled edge, scrolled handle, and pronounced foot. Front decorated with an applied figure of a bird with incised wings and tail, perched on the center stem of three connected flowers, each embellished with a circular stamp. Surface decorated with splashed manganese and covered in a clear lead glaze. A highly desirable Shenandoah Valley form. This wall pocket is slightly larger than most known, and the simple use of only lead and manganese as a glaze is unusual for this form and maker. Restoration to beak, breast, and section of back of bird. Small chip to foot on reverse. H 6 5/8".
