Stoneware Snake Jug, probably Anna Pottery or Texarkana Pottery

Very Rare Salt-Glazed Stoneware Snake Jug with Iron and Copper Slip Decoration, probably Anna or Texarkana Pottery, circa 1890, ovoid, squat-shaped bottle produced from cream-colored clay with rounded spout and heavily incised surface resembling tree bark. Handle in the form of a twig with forked terminal culminating in large multi-veined leaves decorated with copper slip, which extend around to the front of the jug. A hand-modeled snake with incised mouth and heavy scale detail coils around the handle and neck of the jug, its body decorated with bands of iron and copper slip. Surface covered in a salt glaze. The form of the jug and style of the snake suggest this piece was made by Anna Pottery or Texarkana Pottery. An outstanding folk art form. Recently discovered in Texas. Exceptional, as-made condition with some in-firing separations to one leaf. H 6 3/4".
