Outstanding Six-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Large Slip-Trailed Cobalt Fish Decoration, Stamped "W. HART / OGDENSBURGH," New York State origin, circa 1860, ovoid churn with tooled shoulder and applied lug handles, decorated with a folksy slip-trailed cobalt design of a fat-bodied fish. Fish is depicted with open mouth, striped gill area, and striped and spotted body. Slip-trailed lines underneath the fish may represent water. One of the more elaborate examples of this beloved New York State design known. The decoration on this churn is superior to most fish decorations pictured in the 1984 catalog to "An Exhibition of Decorated Stoneware Produced in Ogdensburgh, New York." Sealed inverted T-shaped crack on right side of front, measuring 12 1/2" vertically and 10" horizontally. Chips to interior of rim. Faint, in-the-firing 2 3/4" and 1" surface lines on front, which do not go through to interior. Lid with hairline as well as chips and wear to rim of opening. H (including Albany slip glazed lid) 19 3/4".
