Outstanding Four-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Large Cobalt Hawk Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT.," circa 1855, large-sized, straight-sided jug with rounded spout and applied handle, decorated with a large slip-trailed cobalt design of a landing hawk with spread wings. Wings are accented with numerous feather trails and span an impressive nine inches. A slip-trailed patch of ground with three-posted fence appears below. An exceptional example of the highly desirable Norton hawk design. Decoration is applied in dark, glossy blue with great visual appeal, made all the more dramatic by its large size. As-made condition with two small stone pings on left side and a tiny stone ping on the right side with some very short faint lines extending from it. H 16 1/4".
