Scarce Freehand-Decorated Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock, Stenciled "JAS. McNEES & CO. / GIRTY. PA," circa 1870, straight-sided crock with rounded shoulder, squared rim, and small applied handles, decorated with brushed cobalt swags flanking the number 4 underscored by three stripes. Stenciled in cobalt across the midsection "JAS. MCNEES & CO. / GIRTY. PA." Decoration is applied over slip-coated clay. 7 1/2" x 6 1/2" inverted T-shaped hairline from rim on front. Chip with other tiny chips on interior of rim. H 14 1/2".
