Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Tulip Decoration, Dated in Cobalt 1863, Stamped "JOHN BELL / WAYNESBORO," tall, narrow jug with rounded shoulder, semi-squared spout, and ribbed strap handle, decorated with two brushed-cobalt dotted tulips flanking a four-petaled flower head, applied over a streaky whitish slip. Handle decorated with leafy cobalt brushwork underscored by several cobalt dots. The date "1863" is brushed in cobalt at the base of the handle. This rare example of dated John Bell pottery descended in the family of a Hagerstown, MD woman and has never been offered for public sale. As-made condition. H 15 1/2".
