Rare Open-Handled Stoneware Jar with Incised Floral Decoration, probably NY State origin, late 18th or early 19th century, approximately three-gallon ovoid jar with semi-squared rim and open loop handles, decorated with an incised and cobalt-filled floral design on the front and back. Design consists of a large flower with hollow center blossoming from a stem bearing scallop-edged, multi-veined leaves. Brushed cobalt flower head designs under each handle. Excellent color. A dramatic, very fine example of early incised stoneware. Large, in-the-firing separation under one handle, which curves onto shoulder area of one side. Rim chip. Heavy chipping to base. H 14".
