Very Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Elaborate Cobalt Grapes Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, large-sized ovoid jug with squared rim and applied strap handle. Decorated with a large cobalt design of a cluster of fifteen grapes extending from a stem, flanked by four corkscrewing vines and two large flowers. One of the more elaborate Cowden & Wilcox grape decorations known. Most pieces decorated with this classic Central PA design have only eight grapes. Near mint condition with a spout chip and 2 1/2" in-the-making line in surface at base. H 16 1/4".
