Extremely Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Batter Pail with Cobalt Grapes and Leaf Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, oversized batter pail with brushed cobalt grapes decoration to the left and right of the spout, leaf-like brushwork along the base of the spout, and a highly-detailed leaf brushed on the reverse. Impressed below the spout "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA" along with a two-gallon capacity mark. Includes original tin covers and wood-and-metal bail handle. Possibly a specially ordered item due to the rarity of the size, this batter pail is made truly exceptional with the inclusion of the desirable grapes design on the front, which is uncommon for the form. An impressive example of a classic Cowden & Wilcox form and decoration. Provenance: From a thirty-year New Jersey collection. Some very small rim chips. 3/4" spout chip and a few very tiny spout nicks. The handle at the base on the reverse side of batter pail has a chip with some lines extending a short distance from it that remain on the handle only. H 10 1/2" ; Diameter at base 8 1/2".
