Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Large Cobalt Bird on Stump Decoration, Stamped "O.L. & A.K. BALLARD / BURLINGTON, VT.," circa 1870, straight-sided jug with rounded shoulder, squared spout, and applied strap handle, cobalt-decorated with a slip-trailed folk art design of a lomg-tailed bird with crest perched on the side of a large tree stump. Bird is accented with interesting looping line design across neck and chest, further embellished with cobalt dots. Stump is decorated with numerous slip-trailed dashes. Design measures 10" vertically, covering much of jug's front. Excellent condition with a few small stone pings and small spout chip. H 14 1/4".
