Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Slip-Trailed Cobalt Sunflower Decoration, Stamped "B.C. MILBURN / ALEXA," circa 1850, narrow, straight-sided jar with rounded rim, tooled shoulder, and applied arching handles. Decorated on the front with a slip-trailed cobalt design of a multi-petaled sunflower extending from a stem with wavy-edged leaves. Two additional flower blossoms extend from the sunflower. The shoulder area is decorated with wavy cobalt lines. Reverse decorated with three wavy cobalt lines and three leaf or tassel-shaped designs. Excellent design with strong color. Several base chips, including one on reverse measuring 1 1/4". Several chips to both handles. 2" hairline on underside, extending 1 1/4" onto base of jar. Faint horizontal hairline at base, which does not appear to go through to interior. 2 1/2" hairline from rim on front. 5 1/2" crack from rim on reverse. H 13".
