Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "H.C. SMITH / ALEXA / D.C.," circa 1835, ovoid jar with rounded rim, tooled shoulder, and applied tab handles, decorated on the front with a bold design of two sweeping flowers with curving, multiple-leafed stems. Reverse decorated with four brushed cobalt leaves. One of the finest examples of Smith stoneware we have seen in some time, with exceptionally strong cobalt for a piece bearing this mark. Provenance: Recently found in Tennessee. Two faint lines from rim on exterior, measuring 1 3/4" and 1". These lines are longer when viewed on the interior. Flake on interior. Chip to one handle and a few chips to opposite handle. Base chips. H 9 3/4".
