Exceptional Glazed Redware Figure of a Lion, PA origin, third quarter 19th century, hand-modeled, lead-glazed figure of a standing lion with highly-detailed and expressive face having an open mouth revealing incised teeth and a protruding tongue. Figure is detailed with heavily-incised mane and haunches and an applied tail curving along the animal's back. Figure is attached to an oval redware base, embellished with an impressed circle border surrounding an impressed and incised flowering plant decoration. Base is incised "20" on underside. Figure rattles when shaken. A highly desirable form in American figural redware. Animal figures of this type are rarely found in such remarkable condition, due to their fineness and probable use as child's toys. Provenance: Consigned by a Florida gentleman, whose father purchased it during the 1970's. Damage to ears. Otherwise mint condition. H 5 1/2" ; Length 5".
