Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Large Cobalt Bird on Stump, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, ovoid jug with applied strap handle, decorated with a brushed cobalt design of a bird with well-detailed wing and long tail, perched on a heavily-shaded tree stump. A highly desirable, large-sized design. 1" touched-up area on bird's stomach. Nicks to spout. In-the-firing chip on underside. H 13 1/2".
