Outstanding and Very Rare Five-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Crock, Stenciled "Manufactured By / J.H. Miller / Brandenburg, KY.," circa 1860, straight-sided crock with rounded rim and applied lug handles, decorated with a large brushed cobalt flowering plant including additional flourishes extending from a four-petaled flower at the center of the design. Shoulder decorated with finely-brushed foliate designs underscored by a series of cobalt dashes. Very rare J.H. Miller maker's stenciling below the dashed brushwork. Impressed "5" on reverse. Exceptional color and decoration. Highly desirable maker. Near mint condition with a chip to one handle and a small chip to opposite handle. H 14 1/2".
