Stoneware Water Cooler, attrib. J.P. Schermerhorn, Richmond, VA

July 19, 2008 Stoneware Auction

Lot #: 221

Price Realized: $4,140.00 (Price includes 15% buyer's premium).

Very Rare Stoneware Keg-Form Water Cooler with Elaborate Cobalt Decoration, attributed to John P. Schermerhorn, Richmond, VA, circa 1830, approximately four-gallon, semi-ovoid water cooler, embellished with four groups of ridged banding around its circumference, fitted with a semi-squared bung hole at base. Entire surface is profusely decorated with alternating brushed cobalt designs of flowering vines and single flowers. A total of approximately thirty flowers appear on this exceptional piece of James River stoneware. This cooler is the only Schermerhorn example in a keg-style form we are aware of. His New York training no doubt influenced his decision to make a water cooler in this style. Loss to bottom of bung hole. 2 3/4" chipped section to rim. Other small chips to exterior of rim. Chipping to interior of rim. H 15 3/4".
