Rare Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Pitcher, Stamped "W.H. Lehew & CO / Strasburg. VA," circa 1860, ovoid pitcher with flared base, tooled collar, and applied strap handle, decorated around the midsection with a brushed cobalt swag and hanging flower design. Spout area elegantly decorated with graduated cobalt swags and spots, forming a V at the base of spout. Additional swag decoration along the sides of the collar. Impressed below the collar with Lehew"s earliest and rarest maker's mark with backwards S's in the word "Strasburg." Excellent decoration and highly desirable small size, measuring approximately three quarts. Small rim chips. Two tiny chips to bottom edge of rim molding at spout. H 9 3/4".
