Exceptional Four-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Elaborate Pheasant in Tree Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT.," circa 1855, large-sized jug with sloping shoulder and squared spout, decorated with a large slip-trailed pheasant with spotted breast, crest, and wattle, perched on the branch of a dead tree. Tree detailed with shaded edge, situated on ground surrounded by shrubbery. Outstanding decoration on an unusually large-sized jug. Decoration itself measures 13" tall. 3" vertical line at base continuing a short distance onto underside. Small chip on interior of rim. H 17 3/4".
