Exceedingly Rare and Important Multi-Glazed Redware Pitcher and Washbowl Set, Stamped "J. EBERLY & CO. / STRASBURG, VA," circa 1895, wheel-thrown bowl with ribbed strap handles with faux screw heads at the front and girded by clay balls at the rear, the bowl"s back with applied perforated soapdish and ornamented with coiled pieces of clay. Surface decorated with cream-colored slip and splashed green and brown glazes under a clear lead glaze. Bowl impressed "J. EBERLY & CO. / STRASBURG, VA." Accompanied by a pitcher with flared foot, high-arching spout, and spurred handle with faux screw head at the lower terminal, decorated with cream-colored slip and green and brown glazes under a clear lead glaze. One of three known pitcher and washbowl sets signed Eberly. Recently discovered in New England and purchased by its latest owner in the 1960"s for $95. Bowl with rim chips, wear to edges and soapdish, and two lines from rim on exterior, which do not go through to interior. Pitcher with light wear to handle and base. H (of pitcher) 11 3/4" ; Diameter of bowl 13 1/2".
