Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Elaborate Deer Scene, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT," circa 1855, decorated with an artistically-rendered, slip-trailed scene featuring a reclining stag with turned head and spotted body. Stag is seated on a hill between two split-rail fences and two pine trees. Strong color with a crisp dark cobalt against a light whitish background. An excellent example of a quintessential Norton design. Small base and spout chips. Tiny nick on front. H 14".
