Very Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt House, Tree, and Fence, Scene, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT," circa 1855, decorated with an elaborate ,slip-trailed scene with central tree, house with a door, two windows, and circular dormer, surrounded by foliage, and a double-railed fence. Tree, house, and fence, depicted on a patch of ground with grasses or shrubs. Design slip-trailed in glossy, dark cobalt blue. Desirable small size, with decoration covering much of front. Maker's mark highlighted in cobalt. One of a small number of Norton examples with this decoration known. Small spout chips. Staining at base area. Height 11".
