Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Advertising Jar with Cobalt Double Bird Decoration and Incised Name on Side, attributed to S. Hart, Fulton, NY., circa 1860, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and applied handles, decorated with two slip-trailed cobalt birds with dotted bodies, along with a script "2" with flourish. Impressed below rim "DAVIS & MAIN . / DEALERS IN DRY GOODS / GROCERIES CLOTHIN (sic) & C. / ADAMS CENTER N.Y." Words slip-trailed over in cobalt. On the right side of the jar, the name "Johnny W. Titus," probably the jar's potter, incised in script. A more unusual vessel form than one finds with most Hart double birds. The scarce advertising and extremely rare incised name make this jar a special example of New York State stoneware. Chips and wear to interior of rim. In-the-making, dime-sized stone ping on reverse. Height 12 3/4".
