Rare Three-Gallon Western PA Stoneware Crock with Stenciled Cow Decoration, circa 1860, straight-sided crock with applied handles and incised lines at shoulder, decorated with the stenciling "3 / FROM / THOS JOHNSTON / MANU'FR OF / STONEWARE / Apollo, Armstrong Co, PA". Below these stenciled words, a detailed stenciled decoration of a bull standing on a patch of ground. Cobalt applied to handle terminals. Impressed "3" on reverse. Rare maker's stenciling and very rare stenciled bull design. Excellent color. Thin, inverted Y-shaped crack from rim on front. Another thin, much shorter crack from rim on front. Crack on reverse from rim, extending about 1/3 of the way down back. Crack on underside continuing partway up reverse of crock. Height 13".
