Very Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "B.C. MILBURN / ALEXANDRIA, D.C.," circa 1840, semi-ovoid jar with flaring collar and tab handles, decorated completely around with a flowering garland. Shoulder area embellished with several deeply incised lines and a brushed wavy line of cobalt. Impressed under one handle with Milburn's earliest and rarest maker's mark, in which the words "ALEXANDRIA, D.C." are completely spelled out. One of a small number of examples known with this stamp. Rim chips. One chip on each handle. Some light chipping to base. Height 9 1/8".
