Rare and Important Stoneware Crock with Slip-Trailed Cobalt House and Flag Scene, Stamped "A.O. WHITTEMORE. / HAVANA. N.Y," circa 1870, four-gallon, straight-sided crock with handles, decorated on the front with a house or fort with two chimneys, six windows, and a door. A slip-trailed pine tree stands to the left of the house and an American flag on pole to the right. House, tree, and flag situated on a grassy shoreline with water in foreground. Maker"s and capacity marks highlighted in cobalt. A visually-stunning example of Whittemore"s house decorations. Superb color. Near mint. Small handle chip. Small, in-the-making stone ping on upper left front of crock. 3/4" x 1/2" in-the-making stone ping on reverse near base. 1" in-the-making separation at rim on reverse of crock, which does not go through to interior. One rim chip. Height 10 3/8".
