Very Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Double Bird Decoration and Michigan Advertising, circa 1860, stamped "COOK & AUSTIN / DEALERS IN DRY GOODS / GROCERIES HARD WARE DRUGS & C / BROOKLYN, MICH.," attributed to Samuel Hart, Fulton, NY, slip-cup-decorated w/ crossed birds with cobalt-filled wings surrounded by numerous dots. Jugs of this type are most often found with the maker"s mark "S. HART / FULTON." The fact that this example instead bears the advertising of a Michigan merchant makes it highly unusual. Includes carved wooden stopper. Excellent condition w/ a faint, in-the-making line on underside. Height 14 1/8".
