Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Slip-Trailed Cobalt House and Tree Scene, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT," circa 1870, one-gallon jug with an elaborate slip-trailed cobalt scene. Scene consists of a large, central tree with shaded trunk, a house to the right surrounded by stylized bushes and trees, and a fence to the left, all on a detailed ground. Though the Nortons occasionally used trees, houses, and fences, in their decorations, this is a very unusual composition of these design elements. A cobalt tree is rarely found as the focal point of the decoration on Norton stoneware. Maker"s mark highlighted in cobalt. Unusually small size for such a lavishly decorated example. In-the-making kiln touch and stone ping on front of jug. Two very tiny, shallow spout chips. Height 11 1/2".
