New York State or New England Stoneware House Crock

Remarkable Two-Gallon Stoneware Crock, Decorated with a House with Sprawling Yard and Two Trees, New York or New England origin, circa 1870, wide, straight-sided form with handles, slip cup decorated on the front with an elaborate design consisting of a house with five windows, two chimneys, and a door, and an expansive grassy lawn, flanked by two trees. Small bushes and grassy vegetation line the lawn in the distance. A lavish and artistically rendered decoration. Rare crocks with similar decoration were produced by some Northeastern potteries, including that of J. & E. Norton of Bennington, VT., the Whites" Pottery of Utica, NY, and the Ft. Edward Stoneware Co. Crock is impressed with a two-gallon capacity mark on the front, below the rim. Excellent condition with a few rim chips and minor wear to interior. Height 9 3/4".
